Health Issues:
Drive Against Prostate Cancer
The Brooklyn Skyline, July 9, 2002
To combat cancer in
Brooklyn, City Councilman Marty Golden hosted the “Drive
Against Prostate Cancer,” a mobile medical van that tours the
country providing free prostate cancer screening and alerting the
community about the need for early detection. Golden arranged
for the van to visit two Brooklyn locations – his community office
on Third Avenue in Bay Ridge and the 68th Precinct.

“Prostate cancer is having a
devastating effect on our men and that is why it is important that
men are tested and it is important to detect the cancer in its
earliest stages. I am honored to be part of this program,”
Golden said…
…Last year, when the mobile medical
van traveled through the city, it reported that around eight percent
of men who were tested had some abnormality found as a result of the
screening they received.
As this mobile medical unit travels
throughout our city and our country, many men who have never been
tested before, and many men who are seeking a reevaluation, are
brought out as a result of this van and this event. This testing
made readily available is so crucial to saving the lives of American
men,” Golden added.
